What is an Independent Medical Examination?

An independent medical examination (IME) is an objective, unbiased assessment of an individual by a regulated healthcare professional, namely a Speech-Language Pathologist registered with CASLPO.

The purpose of an IME is to help resolve any disputes and confirm benefits, coverage or settlements for an individual. It is most often requested by Insurers/Claims Adjudicators, Employers, Case Managers, or Lawyers.

In scenarios where there are concerns about speech or language impairments, the process of an Independent Medical Examination (IME) will often incorporate a comprehensive assessment conducted by a qualified speech therapist or Speech Language Pathologist. These specific speech and language professionals play a critical role in evaluating not only the extent and nature of the speech and language difficulties but also in understanding how these impairments affect the individual's daily life.

An IME can be crucial when ensuring an individual you care for is receiving appropriate support and that interventions will be properly tailored to their specific needs and the challenges they may face in their daily activities and interactions.

What happens in an Independent Medical Examination?

Our IME Program is based on a structured step-by-step process, to make it as minimally intrusive, and as accurate as possible. A typical IME occurs with the following breakdown.

Step 1: Referral for IME:

The process starts with a referral, often from an insurance company, employer, or legal representative, indicating the need for an independent evaluation.

Step 2: Selecting the Medical Examiner:

An independent medical professional, who has not previously been involved in the individual’s care, is selected to conduct the examination. Once you have received a referral, and contact us, we will match your specific case with an individual from our team of speech clinicians and language pathologists.

Step 3: Scheduling the Appointment:

You will be notified about the IME and an appointment is scheduled. Instructions regarding preparation for the evaluation are provided to you prior to allow you adequate time to prepare you, your loved one, or your child for the Independent Medical Examination.

Step 4: Review of Medical Records:

Prior to the examination, the medical examiner will review the individual’s medical history, including any relevant documents, reports, and previous medical tests to provide context for the examination.

Step 5: Independent Medical Examination (IME)

The individual attends the IME appointment. This step typically involves:

  1. Initial Interview: Discussing the individual's medical history, symptoms, and how their condition affects their daily life. The independent medical examiner will use this time to evaluate the initial speech capabilities of your loved one or child, and observe noted medical history.

  2. Physical Examination: Depending on the case, a physical examination to assess the individual’s current health status. For language impairments this may require orofacial analysis, tongue and mouth exercises to determine functionality, and other speech-related medical tests.

  3. Specific Assessments: Conducting specific tests or assessments relevant to the individual’s condition. Once the general analysis has been made, the clinician or pathologist will administer specific issue-related assessments to further determine the potential causes, effects, and overall capabilities hindered or impacted by any relevant speech-related impairments.

Step 6: Analysis and Report Preparation:

After the examination, the medical examiner will analyze the findings.

A comprehensive report is then prepared, detailing the examiner’s observations, assessment results, and opinions regarding diagnosis, causation, and the extent of impairment.

Step 7: Submission of the Report

The report is submitted to the referring party (insurance company, employer, etc.).

This report may be used to make decisions regarding claims, treatment plans, or workplace accommodations.

Follow-up Actions (if necessary):

Based on the IME report, further actions may be recommended such as additional medical evaluations, treatment, or other interventions.

Resolution:

The IME findings contribute to the resolution of the case, be it in a medical, legal, or occupational context.
